Duncan joined Pathfinder in 1989 and has served in many roles through the years. He has taught sixth through eighth grade language arts and social studies, served as Co-Interim Director for a brief period, and participated in various other aspects of the school community. Prior to joining Pathfinder, Duncan taught as an adjunct professor in the Communications Division at Northwestern Michigan College for six years. He was also an Artist-in-Residence at both the Leelanau School and the Suttons Bay Public Schools where he taught creative writing to students from third grade through twelfth grade.

Duncan is also a published writer and a painter with works in private and corporate collections across the country. He has participated in many exhibitions in the Northern Michigan region and has been awarded Best of Show at the Suttons Bay Art Festival, the Petoskey Art Fair, and the Algonac Art Fair. In addition, he received the Individual Artist Award for poetry from the State of Michigan Arts Council. Over the years, Duncan has taught painting and creative writing to children and seniors.
