PATHFINDER APPOINTS DR. ARIC VISSER HEAD OF SCHOOL
The Pathfinder School announced the appointment of Dr. Aric Visser as its next Head of School, effective July 2026.
Dr. Visser was selected following a comprehensive and collaborative national search process led by the Board of Trustees and a dedicated search committee. He brings more than two decades of experience in independent and international education, with a deep commitment to experiential, intercultural, and student-centered learning.
“Throughout the search process, Aric stood out for his thoughtful leadership style, his ability to balance strategic vision with practical implementation, and his strong alignment with Pathfinder’s mission and values,” said Dina Kennedy on behalf of the Board of Trustees. “We are thrilled to welcome him to our community.”
Dr. Visser currently serves as Head of School at the International School of Navarra in Spain, where he leads a PreK–12 community and partners closely with faculty and trustees on academic leadership, strategic planning, and accreditation. Earlier in his career, he held leadership roles with School Year Abroad, supporting programs across multiple international campuses and advancing place-based experiential learning. He holds a Ph.D. in Psychology and Social Sciences from the University of Zaragoza, where his research focused on experiential learning and its impact on creativity and intercultural competence.
After many years abroad, Dr. Visser is eager to return to Michigan and continue his work in progressive education. During his visit to campus, he noted the strong sense of connection and engagement that defines the Pathfinder community.
“I believe that Pathfinder has tremendous potential—not only as a strong school for its families, but as a model for others seeking to embody the power of place-based experiential education,” said Dr. Visser. “I am excited to listen, learn, and partner with this remarkable community as we build on its strengths together.”
The Board also expressed deep gratitude to Ben Hebebrand for his service as Interim Head of School during this period of transition. His steady leadership and commitment to Pathfinder’s mission provided continuity and clarity at a pivotal moment for the school.
“We are incredibly grateful for Ben’s thoughtful guidance and care for the community,” Dina added. “His contributions will have a lasting impact.”
Dr. Visser will relocate to Traverse City with his wife, Kimberly Baker, a fellow educator, and their family. He plans to begin his tenure by engaging deeply with students, faculty, families, and alumni.
